Newport to Debden – Essex country circular
Our walk starts from the small town of Newport and visits the attractive villages of Widdington and Debden. On leaving the station we immediately enter the countryside and follow footpaths to Widdington, where St Mary's church, being on the London to Walsingham Camino, is kept open (and has toilets). A short walk from the village leads to Prior's Hall Barn, a magnificent structure believed to have been built in the first half of the 15th century. The village also has a pub, the Fleur de Lys, which should be open.
We skirt the southwest corner of Debden, to follow a minor road to the church of St Mary the Virgin and All Saints, peculiarly spiky outside, but dignified and simple within. After walking through the churchyard we pass a large apparently unused red-brick building and cross a bridge over a limb of the extensive lake situated in the grounds of Debden Hall, a country house demolished in the 1930s, and through fields to reach a minor, but busy, road, which we follow for a short distance before turning to follow the valley back to Newport.
