CANCELLED: Autumn Visit to Royal Botanical Gardens, Wakehurst, Sussex
Wakehurst is the Kew's sister wild botanic garden in Sussex, situated in an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' on the High Weald of Sussex. Its higher rainfall, more moisture retentive soils and range of microclimates complement the conditions at Kew and allow the plant collections to be greatly enhanced. The gardens are very extensive. There is much to see including colourful herbaceous borders, a series of water gardens, Asian Heath garden, a fine collection of trees and many other rare plants.
The Gardens are also home to the National Seed Bank which is conserving around about 10% of the world's plant species for the future. This great conservation project means that it could conserve 20% of the world's plant species by 2020. Autumn is a great time to visit with the promise of some vibrant colours.
This GOC event is being held midweek, which is a quieter time at Wakehurst. It will include a short walk of just over one hour from Balcombe station. It is possible to return the same way, or to catch a bus to either Three Bridges or Haywards Heath stations. The leader would be willing to return by foot to Balcombe. Demand for this option can be ascertained on the day.
General admission is £16.50, with RBG or National Trust members get free entry. However anyone using public transport of walking can get half price admission. Please do not book full price tickets on the website before the day. We can purchase tickets at the Visitor Centre on arrival. Please retain your train tickets in case these are requested.
Note that the walk distance of 3 miles (or 6 miles return) excludes any walking through the Wakehurst gardens themselves.
