Wisteria & Frescoes at Waterperry near Oxford

A glorious sunny day provided us with warmth as we gathered for coffees before entering the garden. It was lovely to greet some regulars and also meet some new faces. After a brief introduction to the site, including about Beatrix and her partner Avice, who set up the horticultural college for women in 1932, and agreeing a time to regroup for lunch in the café, we broke off into smaller groups to stroll at our own pace around the garden. We then frequently bumped into each other on our wanderings. It was lovely to see people, some of whom just met, chatting away like old friends.

Following a very relaxing lunch in the café, basking in the sunshine, we made our way to the house, to see the famed Frescoes. Our guide, Simon, surpassed all expectations and made it really, really interesting. He explained what the images depicted in a way that we could all follow. He also showed us around the house and pointed out various historic features.

As the tour ended, some of us returned to the café, whilst others were tempted by the plants in the plant centre. Some of us also visited the Church, where there is a plaque to Beatrix and Avice.

Soon it was time to say our goodbyes, with lots of promises to meet up again soon. We came away with a warm glow (and plants!) – partly thanks to the sunshine but more so having spent time in such lovely company.

Details of all our events can be found here.

A big thank you to Bill for all his help regarding transport.
