Visits to Patrick Gales Garden, Chygurno and Heligan

Members visited three impressive Cornish gardens over the weekend of 20/21 July. Weather on the Saturday was much better than forecast, with only a little light drizzle for a short period early in the day. First off was well known author Patrick Gale's Garden just a mile from Land’s End. He and his husband Aidan made us very welcome and after telling us the story behind its creation, allowed us to wander at our own pace. Lots of cobbles, sculptures and other features enhanced the intense planting throughout. Benefitting from its mild climate, many plants thrive here that would not survive elsewhere. It is a lovely garden, full of quirks and we enjoyed our visit immensely.

Following a tasty lunch in the cafe at nearby Lamorna Pottery, we made our way to Chygurno Gardens, a private garden that was open for the National Garden's Scheme. This has been created by the current owners over the past 40+ years, and what a joy it is. Set on the side of a steep valley overlooking the sea, terracing enabled the plants growing there to be displayed at their best. From copses of tree ferns to the bluest of blue hydrangeas, we were treated to a feast of impressive, some rare, plants all flourishing in this semi tropical haven.  Hidden meandering paths and steps led us up and down the valley, and well positioned benches enabled us to sit and take in our surroundings. Another gem well worth visiting.

On Sunday the sunshine returned as we assembled near the entrance to the Lost Gardens of Heligan, where we were pleased to meet new member Nick, who was on his first GOC event.  Soon we were off and keen to explore what the garden had on offer. We saw the more formal styles of some areas, food production in the walled garden,  the exuberant planting in the Jungle and the woodland in the lost Valley. Everywhere was well cared for. Crossing the rope bridge was fun! We wandered at leisure, enjoying each other's company, with conversation flowing easily. There was so much to take in, so both a lunch stop and refreshments (yes, there was cake too!) at the end were most welcome.

A big thank you to those who came along, especially to Mike who did a wonderful job of leading us around.
