Probably the wettest garden event I’ve ever attended! The forecast was for heavy rain and boy did it pour. However, the show must go on and Andy, Bert, Ian and I braved the elements. We donned our wetgear, opened brollies and ventured out to explore. First was to look at all the plant stalls, where many bedraggled stallholders were in surprisingly good humour and happy to chat. Lots of bargains = lots temptation, and soon we were carrying our purchases. Deposited back at the car, we then walked around the gardens.
The rain created a special atmosphere, with shiny paths and the patter patter of raindrops hitting foliage and garden features. Even in the rain, it was obvious that this is a very special garden indeed. Luxuriant foliage filled the deep borders and many well established trees were to be seen. Shrubberies surrounded inviting green paths that we followed to the acoustics of a fast flowing stream that runs through the gardens.
Following our visit, we decided to retreat to where else but a great nearby café & deli appropriately called ‘The Retreat’ where we had sumptuous refreshments. It is in a converted chapel and I would highly recommend it.
Although the weather was against us, we still had an enjoyable time in each other’s company and are looking forward to future visits.
