Hunt the Bluebell at Beacon Hill Wood, Shepton Mallet, 18th April 2024

Six members enjoyed a stroll through the glorious Beacon Hill Wood, atop the hill above Shepton Mallet, looking for the promised display of bluebell, which it turns out, bloom later here. However, the wood was magnificent with lots of flora, especially the extravagant carpets of moss. The wood's significance is its position on the Fosse Way and a hilltop view south west across the Somerset Levels, with the distant Glastonbury Tor. We then retired a mile west for lunch, a browse and some plant purchases at the splendid Rocky Mountain Nursery.
