Gardens – Royal Botanic Gardens Kew tour with former employee

As the original Kew Gardens trip a few weeks earlier had to be rescheduled due to weather, it was a relief to see nice weather as we assembled at the entrance. Once all 15 were present (numbers were restricted – sorry to those who didn’t get a place#) and accounted for, Neil spoke about his time as a trainee there and then led us on a trip down memory lane, retracing his steps there 20 years before. A few members remembered paying a penny to enter – it is quite a bit more than that now, but many are members of organisations that give them access. A few had joined The Friends of Oxford Botanic Gardens which is cheaper than some other options, and gives access to many noteworthy gardens, including Kew.

Highlights on our route included the Pam House, a fine walnut tree where we admired and sniffed it's nuts, the rock garden & alpine house, hearing the story of the discovery of the Wollemi Pine and Neils very important role in assisting David Attenborough  plant the first one at Kew in 2005, the historic Kew Palace and the treetop walkway, before finishing our tour at the Japanese Garden and Pagoda, where one attendee said his parents used to ‘court’ beneath.  Many shared their memories and anecdotes which showed what a special place Kew is in the hearts of many. Those stories enriched the tour greatly and gave Neil's voice a rest!

Some had travelled long distances to join in the tour and it was wonderful to see people chatting and making connections, enjoying each other’s company. It’s what GOC is all about – building friendships and having a nice time. We rounded off our trip with the mandatory cake & drinks before says our goodbyes. Many discussing where they would next see each other and making plans. Some remained in the Gardens to explore it further whilst others started their journeys home, having had a most enjoyable day in good company.

# Neil will be leading another visit to Kew on 11 November to admire the Autumn Colour.  It is currently full but please let Neil know if you would like to be added to the waiting list in case anyone drops out. You can find details of the walk here: https://www.goc.org.uk/event/gardens-royal-botanic-gardens-kew-tour-with-former-employee-3/

If you have not already added 'Garden's to your Groups, doing so will keep you up to date with forthcoming events and related activities.
