Dorset Group 9Feb25: Blandford Forest & Ancient Ringmoor

The sun was shining on the virtuous after days of dreary weather when 11 members met outside Durweston Church.
Most of the party had never walked in that area and were certainly immediately impressed by the variety and beautiful views en route even in its dull winter clothing. The actual route was new to the leader too as he decided it would involve easier climbing by reversing the route he had recced and done previously..
The walk started with a climb up the side of a combe to the Travellers Rest, no longer a pub. After a short bit of road-walking we picked up the Jubilee trail to intersect a path down to the village of Turnworth. In the village a minor footpath was taken into the grounds of Turnworth House, looking down into the gardens of some very impressive estate cottages. A short track uphill led us to grassy bank bathed in sunshine for lunch. After lunch, a track led us up to the Wessex Ridgeway and entrance to Ringmoor, the remnants of an Iron Age Village. Continuing along the Ridgeway we came to the 223m Triangulation point for the obligatory photograph. From then on it was all downhill through the lovely beech Blandford Forest and then another limb of the Jubilee Trail back to Church in Durweston.
