Dorset Group 25May23: Around Winterborne Kingston

On a beautiful May morning a group of 10 set off from the Greyhound Inn in Winterborne Kingston to ultimately return there in just over 4 hours for refreshments in their attractive gardens.

Leaving the back lanes of the village the walk started on a series of extensive paths and bridleways across farmland to elevensies at Little Coll Wood with extensive views over Charlton Down to Blandford. Further paths in the dappled shade of various pretty woods led us to the most picturesque village of Winterborne Zelston ( named after the de Seles family).

At our lunch stop by St Mary's Church some members had their snack by the church, some by the crystal clear Winterborne stream and some further explored the village. A signpost for 2 and a quarter miles to Winterborne Kingston pointed our way along a series of varied footpaths back to our starting point.

En route we passed Grade I listed Anderson Manor which was the secret base of the Small Scale Raiding Force (SSRF) making raids across the Channel in WWII to recconoitre and capture prisoners for interrogation.
