After shoehorning our cars into the carpark of the Coaching Inn, 15 of us climbed the path behind the Church in Winterbourne bedecked with Union Jacks ( not for our visit but left over from the Queen's jubilee)
After a convoluted path over where the new power lines had been buried we followed a ridge path picking up the Jubilee trail with views to Hardy's monument to eventually stop for elevensies at the magnificent Poor Lot bronze age burial mounds
.After safely crossing the A35 we climbed to eventually drop down to the village of Compton Valence via a wonderful green lane resplendent with hart's tongue ferns and then banks covered in snowdrops for lunch. Some of us succumbed to tea and cakes in the village hall waited on by some lovely ladies.
The next part of the walk was generally considered extremely beautiful and timeless through interlocking coombes and a stream ( fortunately not too deep after the dry weather)to find a footpath leading us back to the start point for drinks and,I gather, an excellent carvery.
