Dorset Group 12 Dec 21: Old Harry Rocks and Ballard Down

A murky, drizzly morning greeted our band of 21 as we assembled at Ulwell. We pressed on climbing through the deserted golf course onto Godlingston Heath to finally reach the Agglestone (Purbeck's Uluru) emerging through the swirling mists.

The rain cleared as we descended the moor down to the coast at Studland's Middle Beach so we could picnic outside admiring the views towards Old Harry Rocks. After a short visit to Fort Henry (the WW2 bunker overlooking manouvres on Studland beach) we ambled along the Jurassic Coast to reach the famous pinnacles at Old Harry Rocks.

A long steady climb led us up to Ballard Down with commanding views down over Swanage Bay on one side and across to Poole Harbour and Bournemouth on the other. Trekking along the ridge through the shivering sheep we finally reached the Ulwell Obelisk (marking Swanage's water supply) to descend the many steep steps to the start point.

Our damp, challenging walk was rewarded with a sumptuous tea back at our leaders home nearby.
