Cremyll to Mount Edgcumbe via Millbrook and Maker Heights

In weather better than we expected, fifteen members met at the Royal William Yard Plymouth on Sunday morning the 8th of June and crossed by ferry to Cremyll. We walked along the woodland path via Empacombe and Lower Anderton through woodland and along the edge of farmland and a stretch of road along the creeks of the estuary in the direction of Millbrook.

Along the way we passed derelict buildings used in the last war and the fields where barrage balloons were sited at that time. We saw pretty Tudor cottages and elegant villas and houses.

We arrived at Millbrook for a lunchtime stop near a working Boatyard with lovely views in all directions. Following lunch we retraced our steps for a few hundred yards at which point a few of the group retraced their steps to the start point. The other members then took a more challenging route up a steep woodland track known locally as the ‘Alpine Way’ to reach Maker heights.

Despite the weather being a little overcast we were rewarded with far reaching views across Cornwall and Devon. We crossed the heights once again passing what remains of World War two barracks now repurposed for leisure, in the direction of Maker church taking in the views across to Cawsand and the Plymouth Cityscape .

The last stretch took us through Mount Edgcumbe deer park for a welcome tea/coffee break and excellent cake. The group reconvened to cross again on the ferry to Royal William Yard having covered 7.5 miles.
