Lovely autumnal walk in great company within Calke Abbey grounds. Calke Abbey is a popular National Trust property in Ticknall (South Derbyshire). Our walk was around the extensive 600-acre historic parkland. We explored the Abbey grounds, walked along the "Ticknall Tramway" which was originally built to transport limestome from the quarries in the area, visited some of the Ticknall Limeyards which date back to the 15th century. We enjoyed lunch and a treat at the Abbey's Cafe and then we made our way back walking alongside Lady Betty's lake and through the deer park. In the deer park where we were treated to a spectacular rutting show of stags roaring as they asserted their ownership of the land the show being much admired by the many lady deer around them. In the last section of our walk, we went to through a long tunnel (part of the tramway) and shortly after returned back to Ticknall car park having managed to escape the rain for most of the afternoon (despite the unfavourable weather forecast).
