Windsor Great Park Spring walk (10 miles)
Jon Barker will be leading us on a colourful Spring walk of about 10 miles from Sunningdale through Windsor Great Park ending in Windsor. There will be much to see of floral and historical interest, including great views of Windsor Castle.
Starting at Sunningdale station we will pass around Virginia Water, the Valley Gardens and then through Windsor Great Park northwards towards Windsor. We will pass a 100ft (30m) totem pole, a memorial obelisk to the Duke of Cumberland, the pink painted Royal Lodge - formerly home to the Queen Mother, now occupied by Prince Andrew, the 1829 Copper Horse statue of King George III. Finally we will approach Windsor Castle via the famous Long Walk.
There will be an opportunity for coffee at the Savill Gardens cafe, depending on our progress and timings. Windsor will of course have plenty of cafes and pubs for those wishing to have refreshments and to socialise after the walk. However it will be worth bringing water, snacks or a packed lunch and possibly a hot drink with you for maximum flexibility.
The walk passes mainly along well made paths, though it is worth wearing shoes or boots that you don't mind getting muddy.
