Western Pentland Hills - East and West Cairn Hills
East and West Cairn Hills
A fairly easy hill walk up these two prominent hills at the western end of the Pentland Hills. These hills are well seen from the region of Broxburn, East Cairn hill has a substantial cairn on its summit and is the more prominent of the two hills. We will use the ancient Cross Borders Drove Road that runs from the central belt to Hawick in the Scottish Borders for our approch to make a horseshoe walk of the two hills. About 12km (8 miles, c500m of ascent.) If the weather is clear we will have good views over the Eastern Pentland hills, the Forth Valley and to north to the higher mountains of the Southern Highlands.
The route has a couple of steep climbs and descents, is rough in parts and it could be muddy in sections after rain. Good boots, waterproof jacket and trousers, some layers of warm clothing may be required, depending on the weather.
People intending to take part in this event should read GOC's document Safety on the Hills.
