Fletching history.

Fletching is a delightful and historic village near Uckfield. The village boasts a splendid church, St. Andrew and St. Mary the Virgin, completed in 1230. Simon de Montfort, on the eve of the Battle of Lewes (14 May, 1264), came to the church with his barons to pray and to receive the Holy sacrament.

There is a legend that a number of Simon de Montfort's knights who the next day were slain at the battle were carried back to Fletching and hurriedly buried in full armour beneath the nave in the church. The Battle of Lewes paved the way for changes in the way England was governed, leading to the Parliamentary system.

If you have time to visit the church, look out for the unique brass memorial to Peter Denot. It is a pair of gloves mounted upon a stone slab which indicates his vocation as a glover and may be dated back to 1450.
