Tweed Cycleway – Part 2
The Tweed Cycleway is a designated cycle route around 95 miles long that follows the course of the River Tweed through the heart of the Scottish Borders. By following mainly minor roads, it avoids heavy traffic and is an ideal way to discover the delightful scenery that this region has to offer along with its many attractions including castles, abbeys and gardens.
The terrain is mostly gentle, undulating, with just a few short steep sections and is best suited to a road or hybrid bike.
During 2015 the Scottish Borders was once again reconnected to the rail network for the first time in almost 47 years. This makes it practical to cover the whole Tweed cycleway in two separate day trips. We cycled the first part of the route from Carstairs to Tweedbank in September. So this time we will complete the journey, however we will cycle the route in reverse from Berwick on Tweed back to Tweedbank. This is a distance of approx 50 miles, and will take us about 6 hours including stops.
This routing choice gives members the option to join the ODL cycle event on the 1st April (http://outdoorlads.com/event/edinburgh-berwick-tweed-road-cycle) cycling from Edinburgh to Berwick on Tweed. You can stay overnight in Berwick on Tweed (there is a Youth Hostel) or just join us for the day, catching a train on Sunday from Edinburgh to Berwick on Tweed, which run roughly every hour; you will have to book your cycle on your chosen train though.
