To Twyn Llech on the Hatterrall Ridge – the Highest Point in Herefordshire
The Hatterrall Ridge is a dominant feature that runs for about 10 miles, roughly north-south and forms part of the boundary between England & Wales. The Offa’s Dyke long distance path runs along the top of the ridge for almost its entire length.
Towards the northern end of the ridge the path runs over the highest point in Herefordshire at 2306 ft (703 m). It is called Twyn Llech or Black Mountain.
We shall approach the ridge along the Gospel Pass before climbing another 500 ft to reach the top of the ridge and the trig point at Hay Bluff. From here on, the path is generally level, along a paved path across peat bogs and the highest point is marked by a slight rise in the path.
This is a very rewarding walk that, weather permitting, offers spectacular views in all directions (Pen-y-Fan, Titterston Clee Hill, Malvern Hills, etc.) even if the highest point itself is not very dramatic (there is no significant landmark and, once we've reached the 703m point along the ridge, we will simply be turning around and retracing our steps a short way, before descending on the eastern side).
The walk completes the series of walks which were held last year to the highest points in all of the counties in West Midland’s Group to mark the 50th Anniversary of the GOC.
