The Hills and Woods of Croydon
Despite its reputation as an only partly successful 1960s town makeover with its tall buildings, shopping centres, flyovers and relief roads, the London Borough of Croydon has a large proportion of leafy woodland and chalk downland within its borders. Our walk explores some of this countryside. We start straight from East Croydon station in the heart of the town centre, but soon emerge in a series of parks, nature reserves and country parks, generally quiet and bucolic territory. The walk ends at the iconic major housing estate of New Addington, planned after the war by the London County Council. This was, and stillĀ is, on the edge of London and surrounded by countryside when it was built, and for a long time relied for transport links on a bus service to Croydon. This changed in 2000 with the construction of a high quality light rail system, Croydon Tramlink, which we will be using on our return journey to Croydon.
