The Double Waters Walk
This walk just outside Horrabridge is just over 6 miles. Its a circular walk of around 3 or so hours in length. We start at the car park opposite Long Ash Garden Centre and go in a clock wise direction towards across heath land to a tarmacked path for around a mile that leads us downhill into the Walkham Valley.
At the Bottom we see the River Walkman and then cross over a bridge where the River Walkman and Tavy meet. After crossing the bridge we have to navigate a rocky outcrop for a few metres, which are steep to climb a can be slippery when wet so extreme care is needed here, but the effort well worth it.
After that the path evens out and widens down to the river bank of The River Walkman. The path is well worn here and again care is needed due to rocks and tree branches that lead out to a road. We then join The Drake trail that leads us into a meadow and a climb up to join the cycle route 27.
We then continue along the old GWR railway from Plymouth to Tavistock line (Plym Valley) and now cycle path for around 2 miles that goes over the Gem Bridge built in 2012 in replacement of the original bridge and further on Maggie Viaduct, (a local name as The Maggie Inn was close by) built by Brunel. This bridge is unusual in the fact it was built with blue Staffordshire brick!
After we reach the site of Horrabridge station. We turn very sharp right and follow the trackway that becomes grassy and continue across the heath for around 10 minutes and return to the car park.
