A winter walk from St Albans to Hatfield. Walkers have a choice of point-to-point (6 miles) or circular (12 miles), with railway stations available at each end, or a bus ride back to St Albans.
The outbound route follows the disused railway line between St Albans and Hatfield. This is mainly hardstanding and almost-entirely on the flat.
The return route runs parallel to the outbound route. Most of the return route is on hardstanding, except for one offroad part, which uses the grasslands of Ellenbrook Fields.
Most of both outbound and return routes is urban, with limited exposure to the raw countryside.
The route is wholly exposed. Expect wind-chill. Wear appropriate warm clothing. Wear robust trainers or boots.
Bring packed lunch, plenty of water, perhaps a hot drink, and something to sit on.
The start point is accessible by public transport. The outbound route is accessible to wheelchairs, with some assistance required on a few minor gradients. The return route includes some offroad, with an on-road/on-pavement alternative.
Optional pub stop, and quality kebab stop, at the end of the walk.
