We pass along the edge of Calleva, originally an Iron Age settlement, capital of the Atrebates tribe and, later, a town in the Roman province of Brittania, from 43AD. It was slightly larger, at 99 acres, with a distinctive street grid pattern. It had public buildings, and flourished until the early Anglo-Saxon period. The earthworks, and much of the ruined walls are still visible, as is the amphitheatre. c AD 70-80. We continue north-east to Stratfield Mortimer, returning along a slightly different route.
