A 6.9 mile circular walk from the pretty hamlet of Rowarth, Derbyshire on the edge of the Peak District. In the 1780’s, during the early industrial revolution, around six watermills were build along the fast flowing stream that runs through the village. Some attractive stone millworker’s cottages remain.

Our route will include 3 listed buildings: Anderton House (1797), The Little Mill Inn (1780) and Aspenshaw Hall (1727). The latter is of interest because it was visited by the novelist Edith Nesbit in the late 19th century during her friendship with the Woodcock family who lived there. It is considered to feature in The Prophet’s Mantle (1889), a book she co-wrote with her husband Hubert Bland.

After skirting round Lantern Pike  but not climbing it, we cross Matley Moor and ascend to Cown Edge, the highest point of the walk. There are excellent views of the Sett Valley, Kinder Scout and beyond in clear weather.

Equipment:  walking boots, warm clothing, waterproof jacket and trousers,  sun protection, insect repellent, trekking pole(s) if normally used.

We have scheduled this walk for the 3rd Saturday of the month because the 2026 All Wales weekend will be taking place 11-14th September.
