  • TerrainThe route follows the Thames path, so is fairly level, though there are a number of places where steps shorten the route. Some sections may be muddy.

This walk starts from the attractive Thameside town of Richmond, formerly in Surrey and closely follows the River Thames, although on the north bank the path occasionally detours inland. It passes through the separate settlements of Isleworth, Brentford and Kew. This section of the River Thames is tidal, and is accompanied by Thames Path national trail paths on both banks. This circular route is formed by combining the two. The outward route is via the north bank, formerly in the old county of Middlesex as far as Kew Bridge, and returns by the south bank, formerly in Surrey. (Both these terms are still in use today, especially during the Oxford to Cambridge boat races).

There is much of interest to see along the walk, including Richmond Green and river front, Syon House and Park, the industrial heritage of Brentford including the Steam and Musical museums, and Kew Bridge with views of the riverside hamlet of Strand-on-the Green. The return leg is by contrast a quiet, wood-fringed route, with views back over the river to Syon House and some of the places passed a few hours before.  Alongside the Thames various  interesting structures, boats, buildings and wildlife can be seen.

Although a circular walk, the walk could be left early at various points with stations nearby at Syon Lane, Brentford or Kew Bridge, which have trains to Clapham Junction and Waterloo, or Kew Gardens (District line or London Overground North London line).
