Mynydd Machen is not a mountain, but a 1,188 feet hill lying between the town of Risca and the village of Machen in Caerphilly County Borough. Its summit is crowned by a trig point and a mast.
Following a strenuous, but manageable, ascent along tracks and through woodland at the beginning of the walk, to the ridge, the walker is rewarded with some of the most stunning views to be found in South Wales (weather permitting). After a walk along the ridge to the trig point, the route descends, steeply in places, and then through forest back to the start. Loose stones and soft ground make up a lot of the paths. Care will need to be taken throughout the walk and those attending will need to be good on their feet. 11 am start.
