Green Birmingham: an urban and waterside ramble
Explore surprisingly green Birmingham on a captivating 9-mile walk that begins at St. Philip’s Cathedral, a Georgian gem just a two-minute walk from New Street Station.
We head through the elegant Victoria Square into Centenary Square, that contrasts modern architecture with historical landmarks, including glittering Library of Birmingham.
It may be a well-worn cliche that Birmingham has more miles of canals than Venice, but they are worth exploring. From Gas Street Basin, a historic area, once central to Birmingham’s industrial past, is now a picturesque mix of colourful narrowboats and bars. Follow the towpaths along the canals, discovering hidden gems like quaint bridges and graffiti art that tell the story of Birmingham’s transformation.
The walk takes you south on largely traffic-free paths towards the University of Birmingham, offering scenic greenery. We will have our picnic in view of the world’s tallest freestanding clock tower, surrounded by the university’s peaceful gardens and historic red-brick buildings, before heading north to the city. The walk should end around 15h/1530h giving plenty of time to catch trains home, or there's the option of staying later to enjoy a Sunday afternoon in Birmingham's Gay Village.
This 9-mile journey blends Birmingham’s history, modernity, and natural beauty, providing a perfect exploration of the city’s diverse charm.
