Evening Walk in the North Hampshire Downs 4 June 2022
The walk first takes us north from Oakley, joining the Wayfarers’ Walk through woodland and open fields with some beautiful views to Hannington with its village green and All Saints' Church, some parts of which date from the 11th century. Many buildings are Grade II listed.
The Vine At Hannington is a popular pub with hikers. Originally The Wellington Arms, it stands on land that once belonged to the estate of the Duke of Wellington.
The return half takes us through Malshanger Park. The house (c. 1806) dominates the estate. In the 19th century, it was owned by Wyndham Spence Portal, of banknote fame in nearby Laverstoke. He was created Baron Portal of Malshanger in 1901, and was Chairman of the London and South-West Railway Company. After he died in 1905, his son sold the property; it was broken up during the great depression and the farms sold, in separate lots, to the Colman family of mustard fame. In 1983 they gave the property for the use of the Holy Trinity Church in Brompton, which now uses it for conferences and retreats.
The elaborate gardens have largely disappeared, but the park retains some of its original 19th century elements: open parkland, small wilderness, and mature trees.
