Discovering Newton Abbot
Newton Abbot was created out of two Towns. One, south of the River Lemon was owned by the Abbey of Torre. To the north of the River Lemon was land owned by the Bushel family, so this town became known as Newton Bushel. both settlements expanded over the years with the wool industry and an industry making leather goods, The Markets, Newfoundland Trade, The clay pottery industry,
The Abbot was also allowed to hold an annual fair and later the Great Western Railway arrived in 1846 and created railway yards and workshops that become a major employer in the town. finally in 1901 the towns merged into one to the one settlement of 26,900 people we see today.
