Castell y Bere, Abergynolwyn at the foot of Cadair Idris in the southern Eryri mountains
A fascinating route which circumnavigates Foel Cae’r-berllan starting in the village of Abergynolwyn. We walk along a valley with the Afon Dysynni hemmed in at its base before veering off above Coed Cae’r-berllan and approaching Castell y Bere, which is prominent on a rocky outcrop and described as one of Wales’ most romantic castles, and we'll have time to explore the ruins. We take in the church of Llanfihangel-y-Pennant, famous for Mary Jones, who in 1804 walked barefoot 26 miles from the village to Bala to buy a Welsh Bible. This led to the formation of the British and Foreign Bible Society, and Mary Jones World, a heritage centre about her life is located near Bala.
We return along the cwm of Nant-yr-eira, initially through woods and then along an open trackway leading us back to Abergynolwyn.
We did this walk in early May and the scenery was lush with spring moving towards summer's abundance. It's a varied walk along quiet roads, through fields and woodland with a beautiful stream and waterfall. There are 3 stiles along the route and if wet there's the potential for muddy ground where cattle for be treading. On the reece we met a field of Welsh Black cattle who were very calm.
