A summer coastal walk – Dover to Deal over the white cliffs
This walk will take us about 80 miles from London and will take the opportunity of long daylight hours for a long and eventful day out on the Kent coast. We also hope to meet friends from the East Kent GOC group. Our walk is a classic we last undertook 3 years ago with a highlight of walking the famous White Cliffs of Dover, with views over the Channel to France.
After passing through the historic town of Dover, views will emerge of the spectacular Dover castle. We walk up onto the cliffs where we will see the activity at the port of Dover, one of the busiest in the country. We will then follow the clifftop path across rolling countryside, past the historic South Foreland lighthouse to descend to St Margaret's Bay for our lunch break. It will be possible to have a short sea swim here.
After ascending the cliffs (again!) after lunch the walk descends gradually to sea level. The final section is a classic seaside promenade walk along the coast. We will pass the formidable Tudor Walmer and Deal castles before arriving at the charming town of Deal. If it is a hot day then another swim may then be in order! After taking whatever refreshments we feel we have earned, arrival back in London is likely to be late - expect to be tired but happy!
