A short walk on Silchester Common
Silchester Common. An easy 5 mile walk with history.
The walk first takes us along the edge of Calleva Atrebatum, originally an Iron Age settlement, capital of the Atrebates tribe and later a town in the Roman province of Britannia. After the Roman conquest of Britain in 43 AD the settlement, developed from a late Iron Age settlement, became the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum. It was slightly larger, about 99 acres, and with a distinctive street grid pattern. It had public buildings and flourished until the early Anglo-Saxon period. The earthworks and much of the ruined walls are still visible, as is the amphitheatre (c. AD 70-80) where we pause to step back in time.
