A short circular walk on Walbury Hill commemorating GOC’s 50th Anniversary in June 2024
In June 2024 the Berkshire and mid Thames Group group marked the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Gay Outdoor Club with a a 3 mile saunter around Walbury Hill in West Berkshire from the top of which, in clear weather, you can see counties as far away as Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. I thought it might be fun to recreate that walk 2 years later. The walk will take in West Berkshire's highest point at 974 feet. We will stroll along Wayfarers Way, part of the Test Way and walk along the spine of Walbury hill passing Gallows Down the site of a Gibbet originally constructed in 1676 which was used to display the bodies of two local criminals. It has never been used since. The walk continues around and down Walbury Hill passing through the small hamlet of Combe and then a longish uphill climb back up the hill to our starting point. We plan to have a meal at a local pub.
