The London Loop (Stage 15) - Harold Wood to Purfleet
This last section of the London Loop is long - at 14 miles - but largely level. We follow the valley of the River Ingrebourne with its extensive pastureland and several highlights including the Upminster Windmill and the Pages Wood artworks. On reaching the River Thames at Rainham after 9 miles, walkers who do not wish to complete the full 14 miles in one day can conveniently leave the walk.
[PLEASE NOTE: If anyone wishes to finish the walk another time, a second provisional walk is beingĀ arranged for Saturday 15 October to run from Upminster to Rainham - opportunity to join there - and thence to Purfleet]
After Rainham, there follows a fascinating final section of the London Loop which is full of history and atmosphere along the estuarial Thames. These include an ancient river ferry crossing point, extensive Thames side marshland and severalĀ Second World War concrete barges. Lastly there is the RSPB bird reserve at Rainham Marshes formed on reclaimed land which we pass alongside.
We will finish the walk, and the London Loop, at Purfleet, which lies almost opposite Erith across the Thames, from where we started our epic circumnavigation of the London Loop back in May 2021.
