Aber Valley Mining Heritage (Caerphilly) and Mynydd Eglwysilan
This is a moderate and relatively flat nine mile circular walk, on mostly good quality hard surfaces, exploring the mining heritage of the Aber Valley to the north of Caerphilly. Initially, the route is from Abertridwr to Senghenydd along the upper reaches of the Aber Cycle Way and along the High Street to visit the Welsh National and Universal Mining Memorial Garden. From here, a few steps are retraced and then there is a gentle climb of approximately 150 metres onto Mynydd Eglwysilan along farm tracks before picking up the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway to visit the church that gives this mountain its name. The route then heads through Groeswen on a minor road to the White Cross pub where the exterior of the imposing Welsh congregational chapel can be observed, and then on to the outskirts of Penyrheol to pick up the bottom section of the Aber Cycle Way back to Abertridwr.
Weather permitting, there will be views over the Taff Valley, Trefforest, Church Village, Taffs Well and Garth mountain, where we have previously walked. The walk can be shortened to about six miles for those not wanting to walk nine miles, or in inclement weather.
A dog friendly walk, but dogs will need to be closely controlled when walking near farmland and on public roads. Only assistance dogs permitted in the Mining Disasters Memorial Gardens.
