Howe Park Wood circular via Tattenhoe Valley Park / part of North Bucks Way / Shenley Wood – 7.5mi
The start of the walk is the Howe Park Wood Centre car park opposite Westcroft District Centre off Chaffron way (H7). The centre houses a nice case and toilets. Howe park wood is one of three ancient woodland within the boundaries of Milton Keynes acquired by Milton Keynes Development Corporation 1968. At the time it was a dark wet impenetrable thicket that over the years has been manged into a tranquil oasis humming with wildlife and colour. In April / May, the bluebells are in flower and the walks passes these bluebell woods.
Close to the woods is St Giles Church. The present building dated back to about 1540 although a church may have stood there since 1100. The building has been derelict several time and for many years has stood among green fields but now it is surrounded by housing in Tattenhoe though at a distance.
Tattenhoe valley park has several ponds although these days the housing in Milton Keynes come ever closer to the park but still a nice green space where birds and insects can been seen.
Part of the North Bucks way skirts the edge of another wood on this walk, Oakhill wood where we will be walking between the wood and HMP Woodhill (although you'll be hard pressed to see through all the trees).
Shenley wood in composed principally of ash and oak trees, some of which are very old. The wood was recorded in the Domesday book survey of 1086.
