Stratford Rivers, Tramways, and a Shakespearian curse
A delightful May circular walk starting from Stratford upon Avon train station - the later start time of 11:30 is to accommodate train arrivals (Birmingham, Warwick etc). A short walk will lead us to the heart of the town near the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Here we have a coffee stop where fresh food and drinks can be obtained from the Sunday market.
From here we head out of Stratford walking the old Tramway which was a horse drawn wagonway which brought coal from the Black Country to Warwickshire. We pass the new Marina and join the Riverside using the Shakespeare Avon Way path enjoying the tranquillity of the river and countryside. We head further out joining the Greenway which used to be the old Honeybourne Line which opened in 1859 and was the first railway line to reach Stratford upon Avon. It is also good for spotting nature including farmland birds and wild flowers. Walking further up the Greenway, we will have our lunch stop where an old railway carriage has been converted into a delightful café serving drinks and fresh food. After lunch we walk along the river before re-joining the Greenway passing the horse racetrack. We re-enter Stratford via the Holy Trinity Church (the burial place of a certain playwright and a curse) and the Avonbank Gardens.
There is the opportunity of drinks at the end of the walk
