On 24th January Basil and Bruce will need a gentle ramble of about 7 miles exploring the East Lancashire beauty spot of Haslingden Grane and its 3 reservoirs.
We will meet at 10:45 am outside the Holden arms public house on the corner of Holcombe Road and GraneRoad.
The nearest postcode is BB4 4PD. There is parking on the roadside but the pub car park has to be paid for inside the pub and so is best avoided. Public transport would be the X41 red express bus from Manchester. Exit the bus in Haslingden town Centre and walk down Grane Road for about 3/4 of a mile to the pub.
The Grane is usually muddy but the views are splendid. There is a rich industrial heritage of slate quarries which we can explore on the way.
You will learn how Trafalgar square is itself paved with stone from this very valley. Walking poles would be an advantage.
We will walk up one side of the reservoir, through the larch plantations. At the top of the valley there is an outdoor café which can be relied on for a decent snack. We return on the other side of the valley and pass the home of Basil and Bruce where light refreshments may be served.
