Much Hadham and Bakers’ End (springtime edition)
** Updated after final test on 03May2025**
A circular walk of 11.5 miles from Much Hadham. The route takes in the glory of deeply rural East Herts, with long views of curvaceous countryside, rolling hills and sensuous textures.
The village of Much Hadham has an affluent history, represented by picturesque grand old buildings, nowadays decorated with expensive cars on driveways. There are few settlements to visit on this route. The route uses parts of the Greenwich Meridian Trail and the Harcamlow Way. Much of the route is on bridleway.
The route elevation ranges from 51m to 97m, with the steepest gradients being i) 39m uphill over 800m; and ii) 40m uphill over 1.52km and its corresponding downhill.
Bring packed lunch, lots of water and something to sit on. Lunch will be sat on the ground. Lunch will be later than normal, pack a snack too.
Bringing a dog? The walk is suitable for well-behaved dogs. The route includes fields with sheep and lambs. The bridleways are likely to include horses with riders.
The route is largely exposed. Windproofs and sun block recommended.
Wear sturdy boots, especially if rain precedes the walk within two days. Expect mud. The ground is very uneven in places; thinner-soled urban walking shoes are unlikely to be suitable for this walk.
Access to the meeting point by public transport shall require either a taxi or a lift from another member.
Optional pub stop at the end of the walk.
Optional informal pub meal after the walk: the menu looks very good. British tapas, either as a meal or a starter, followed by larger plates. Budget £10 per tapa, £20 per main meal.
