Dorset Group 9Jul23: Isle of Portland (North Circuit)

The morning was cloudy; although rain threatened there was only one light shower. After that it was warm and sunny with blue skies.

16 members (including one new member) started from the Heights Hotel, along the old quarry rail track and dropped down to the naval cemetery with views over Portland Harbour and Chesil beach.

We continued uphill to the Verne Prison and the Jailhouse Café before continuing to the High Angle Battery and on to the Governor’s garden (adjacent to the Young Offenders Institute) for a lunch stop.

Afterwards we moved along the east weares with views over Weymouth bay and the Jurassic coasts onwards to Church Ope cove. Then we turned inland past the windmills to the west weares with views over Lyme Bay,  continuing on to Tout Quarry before returning to our leader's home for a sumptuous tea.

Members commented that they were seeing parts of the island not seen before.
