Dorset Group 9Apr23: Purbeck Ridge from Herston to Corfe Castle

On a beautifully sunny Easter Sunday morning our group of 18 plus dog set off from Herston village across the water meadows towards Ulwell. After a stiff climb we reached the Purbeck Ridge at Godlingston Hill enjoying wide reaching views back towards Swanage and the sea.

Strolling along the ridge there were further views east over Poole Harbour and west to the Jurassic Coast aswell as down into the valley with frequent steam trains plowing through. Passing the numerous tumuli of Nine Barrow Down we finally descended towards Corfe Castle to reach the Swanage Railway Station.

After a short break at the heritage station for refreshments, visiting the museum, signal box and art gallery we all boarded the steam service back to Herston Halt. A brief walk across fields of sheep led us back to Herston and a welcome afternoon tea at our leaders home.
