Kilmahog and The Falls of Leny
This is a moderate walk that will give a flavour of walking in the mountains, without actually having to climb one. It walks from the hamlet of Kilmahog, this is just a collection of houses just outside Callander, and climbs on forest tracks below the precipices of Ben Ledi with extensive views of Loch Lubnaig.
The return is through pleasant birch woodland above The Falls of Leny, where the Garbh Uisge (literally 'Rough Water' in Gaelic) crosses the Highland Boundary Fault, which separates the Highlands, defined here by tough grey schist, from the brown sediments of the Lowlands. On this walk you will be travelling from the Lowlands to the Highlands in a couple of miles.
Its recommended that you bring some midge repellent with you as the walk is predominantly in woodland, which will be sheltered but also there could be insufficient breeze to keep the midges at bay when you stop for refreshments.
The walk is about 7 miles (11km) with c300m of ascent (about 4-5 hours).
For those interested, a 1.5 mile round trip extra walk after the end of the main route can be undertaken to visit the impressive Dunmore hill fort nearby.
