West Kent – Cranbrook and Sissinghurst – 4th August, 2024.

This month's saw 11 of us meet in Cranbrook for a 10-mile circular walk which was due to take in Sissinghurst Castle and village. There were pleasant wide views across the Kentish countryside, along quiet lanes and through wooded areas.  Unfortunately, some of the paths were very overgrown with brambles and nettles, and despite a couple of us taking secateurs, we were severely slowed down. Lunch was later than usual, just outside a free-range hen compound, just after contending  one of those overgrown paths!

After lunch, we decided to quicken the pace, making up for lost time. I was engrossed in conversation and completely missed a turning!  We agreed to amend the route and shorten it to exclude the visit to the castle as time was marching on.

Still pleasant walking through fields and orchards, and Sissinghurst village, on our return to Cranbrook.  Back in the town, most of us descended on The George Hotel for drinks in the outside courtyard where we held a useful informal planning meeting for next year's walks.

A lovely day with lovely company, despite the unmaintained footpaths and unplanned detour !

Maybe I'll lead this walk again in a couple of year's time, hopefully, without losing my way! C'est la vie.
