Finally, the first proper day of summer ! An excellent turn-out of 15 for this month's walk starting from the picturesque village of Appledore, near the Kent/Sussex border on the northern edge of the Romney Marsh. The walk took us over pastureland and along flooded ditches that run into the nearby canal. Wide views up to the Isle of Oxney and, once there, views to the North Downs in one direction, and towards the coast at Dungeness in the other.
We stopped for lunch in the churchyard at Stone-in-Oxney, as well as taking time to look inside the church at the Roman stone altar that gives the village its name.
After lunch, we continued up to the highest point on the Isle of Oxney, along the Saxon Share Way and descended down the other side of the hill to the Royal Military Canal. From there, the path took us along the canal back into Appledore for drinks at The Black Lion.
Great to see everyone today, making such an enjoyable day out.
