The Aberglaslyn Pass

The Glaslyn may not be one of the largest rivers in Wales, many will never have heard of it and those that have may well struggle to say where it is, but we think it is one of the best riverside walks going!

Starting in the picturesque village of Beddgelert our walk first headed to the famous Gelert's grave.  Don't let anyone tell you the story of the dog saving a baby from a wolf was just made up by a local hotel as a marketing ploy... Foel, our resident canine expert, wouldn't hear a word of it!  The grave was followed by the riverside path, following the Aberglaslyn Pass.  With sections hewn from the rock, a path almost level with the river in parts, and the white water following recent heavy rain this has got to be one of the most impressive river paths going.  We were certainly not the only ones enjoying the somewhat wet day, though those passing us in kayaks with wetsuits and spash decks certainly seemed better prepared for the conditions.

Our first section of river was followed by a moderate climb up into one of the old copper quarry areas of Cwm Bychan, with the remnants of the arial ropeway built in 1927 to carry ore from the quarry back down to the valley.  Despite rain on our ascent, the skies cleared at the top of the cwm, allowing us the opportunity to enjoy lunch, and enjoy the view, before descending to Llyn Dinas, and the return path along the river to Beddgelert, and a quick (almost icy) shower just before we completed the route.
