On the steps of the church in Sitges, 32 walkers assembled promptly at 10.30. Three groups, two different routes, what could possibly go wrong? With Martin Gilbraith in charge obviously nothing.
The faster group expertly lead by James Bailey set off at Formula One speed along the coast, up the steep hillside via several long flights of steps and swept by many amazing villas, not pausing for breath until they reached the end of the road, where the real climb began. The slower group expertly lead by Martin set off on the same route at a somewhat slower pace. The Charabanc era group were driven to the very top of the hills and wandered along woodland paths only to arrive last at the lunch stop, maybe they got lost in the woods!
All the walkers were rewarded with amazing views, back down to Sitges, along the coastline and down onto the railway line and old road both hugging the coast and disappearing into tunnels at regular intervals. The route was steep in places but the woodland, wild flowers, warm sunshine and great company made for a very enjoyable walk.
The lunch stop at a pretty hermitage provided more fine views of the Garraf National Park and glimpses of the motorway far below. The return route offered equally good views over Sitges, towards Vilanova and more attractive woodland paths. The less exhausted made it to Parrots Bar for cava/beer/aperol spritz.
Thanks go to Martin, James and the Charabanc drives Gary and Martyn for a most enjoyable day!
