Despite the frankly dismal weather forecast, four of us set out to tackle the popular Thorney Island circular route.
The significance of completing this route wasn't lost on us, as the path had only recently reopened to the public after years of closure.
As the island is designated Ministry of Defence land, the hike is bookended by a slightly intimidating process: we had to seek permission to enter and exit the route via an intercom system at the gate.
The perimeter path itself was surprisingly firm underfoot and well-maintained. However, it was impossible to forget where we were, thanks to the constant, stern warning signs lining the route that cautioned against straying onto private MoD property.
Sure enough, the forecast proved reliable: rain was our steady companion for the majority of the circuit. Even so, we managed to enjoy the environment, catching glimpses of various seabirds along the coastal edge and certainly soaking up enough cleansing sea breeze to justify the bracing conditions.
