Solent Midweek – River Itchen

Meeting at the Winchester East Park and Ride Car Park we walked along the Itchen into Winchester taking in the grand Bishops Palace and the ruins of Wolvesly Castle (built in the 12th Century) on the way. Catching the train to Eastleigh and meeting with a new member from Southampton we set off for the River Itchen walking the 8 miles back to Winchester. The terrain constantly changed making it a most interesting and varied walk. Lots of wild life and numerous flowers added to the pleasure. The recent spell of constant rain meant that the path was several times under water and above the ankles at one point but all 6 walkers refused to turn back. Stopping at the Shawford Bridge Inn for an excellant lunch we then continued along the River and then everyone voted for an additional trek to go up to the summit of St Catherenes Hill to visit the Miz Maze. All agreed that the walk should be repeated in the future though perhaps becoming a Summer walk
