Ramble Stourhead, Sunday 1 March 2026

Great to welcome new members on a slightly misty but predominantly dry day, taking in paths around the wider Stourhead Estate.

Twelve of us in total, headed below the 18th Century dam, currently undergoing repairs by the National Trust, before taking the lower path through the Western Woodland and climbing towards Alfred's Tower. Here a lunch stop was made and we also found the refreshment van open.

The return journey along the old Terrace Ride; the route of the historic 18th century carriage trail, with views down into Six Wells Bottom and of St Peter's Pump, the source of the River Stour.

The final stretch brought us past Stourhead House, then through the walled kitchen garden, back to the car park. The walk was rounded off by a visit to the cafe, which was enjoyed by all those there.
