Llanthony valley and hills

This was a strenuous, but glorious trek along Ffawyddog Ridge, high above the Llanthony valley, at the southern end of the Vale of Ewyas in the Black Mountains.

After an initial four mile walk to Capel-y-ffin from Llanthony, along lanes and the lower Offa's Dyke Path on a low level, slightly undulating route, in intermittent drizzle, we climbed up to the Ffawyddog Ridge.  Thankfully, the weather cleared as forecast and gradually improved, and we were rewarded with a truly fabulous mountain walk across the ridge, with sweeping views of Sugar Loaf, Skirrid, and beyond, down to the Bristol Channel.  The route eventually dropped from the ridge on a steep and pretty path that gave great views of the valley and the priory, and ended at the cafe/pub in the priory grounds.
