Gardens Group visit to beautiful gay owned Cwm Weeg Gardens in Mid Wales

Following a lovely walk some of us had, expertly led by Michael at Gilfach Nature Reserve, we joined more members to visit gay owned Cwm Weeg for what we soon discovered is a very special place. Umbrellas were the order of the day but it did not dampen our spirits or spoil our enjoyment. It truly surpassed our expectations.

Lovingly created by Wolfgang & Kingsley over 34 years, it felt like paradise on this remote Welsh hillside. Pristine gravelled areas, perfect lawns, sumptuous borders, fine sculptures and interesting structures galore all combined to create a very unique place. Exploring the cave, with its dry ice and coloured lighting was really fascinating, as was the tower currently under construction. Wide grassy paths ran between colourful herbaceous borders. Many fine trees, some unusual, all planted by the current owners were admired, and the woodland walk, alongside a gurgling stream, gave a sense of untouched nature and remoteness that was very different from the rest of the garden.

Conversation flowed easily as we shared our knowledge about what we were looking at, often using various apps as many of the plants were new to us. It was lovely to see people chatting comfortably like old friends.

Inevitably, tea, coffee & homemade sweet things (the butterscotch & coconut cake was lush!) were on offer, and quickly availed of. It was, after all, in a good cause to raise funds for the NGS. We spent quite a while sitting around the table putting the world to rights before reluctantly saying our goodbyes and departing.

A very special place that we hope to re-visit in 2026.
